Frank Lampard appoints as interim Chelsea manager

Lampard will return to work for Chelsea as a temporary head coach for the remainder of the 2022/23 season. He will be assisted by former Chelsea players Ashley Cole, Joe Edwards, and Chris Jones.

Lampard was present at Stamford Bridge as a guest of club chairman Toddy Boehly to watch Chelsea’s goalless draw with Liverpool on April 5. After reaching the agreement to become the temporary head coach, Lampard may lead the team in their away match against Wolves on April 8, followed by the first-leg match of the Champions League quarter-finals against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu next week.

According to experts, Lampard is the right person to lead Chelsea to the end of the season as a temporary head coach since he had previously managed the club for 18 months and is a living legend of the team. Compared to current temporary head coach Bruno Saltor, Lampard’s voice has much more influence.

During Lampard’s temporary tenure, Chelsea will continue to negotiate with two candidates, Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique, for the permanent head coach position. According to the Dailymail, on April 5, Luis Enrique was present in London to negotiate with Chelsea. Here, the Spanish coach was said to present a detailed plan for building a possession-based playing style and prioritizing the use of young players.

Chelsea’s Sporting Director, Christopher Vivell, highly values Enrique’s experience and achievements as a coach. Enrique’s most memorable milestone was the 2014/15 season when he helped Barcelona win the historic treble consisting of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Champions League.

Enrique became the head coach of the Spanish national team in 2018 and resigned after leading “La Roja” to the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup. If he joins Chelsea, the 52-year-old strategist will have his first experience working in the Premier League.
