Lionel Messi reaches 700th club career goal
With his goal in PSG’s 3-0 victory over Marseille, Lionel Messi has officially reached the milestone of 700 goals in European competitions, a feat previously achieved only by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi and Mbappe alternated scoring and assisting in the game, helping PSG secure a 3-0 victory over Marseille in the 25th round of Ligue 1. Mbappe scored the opening goal for the away team in the 25th minute after a pass from Messi. Just four minutes later, Mbappe assisted Messi in doubling the lead.
In the 55th minute, Messi displayed his class with a fantastic assist for Mbappe to score and seal the 3-0 win, helping PSG strengthen their position at the top of the Ligue 1 table with 60 points after 25 games, eight points clear of second-placed Marseille.
With his goal against Marseille, Messi has officially matched Ronaldo’s record of 700 goals in European competitions. Messi had previously scored 672 goals for Barcelona, and this was his 28th goal for PSG.
Currently, only Messi and Ronaldo have achieved the milestone of 700 goals in European competitions. However, Messi is likely to surpass Ronaldo as the Portuguese star has already left Manchester United and has little chance of increasing his goal tally to 701.
With just two more goals, the 2022 World Cup champion will establish a new milestone in his career.
Following the Marseille game, Messi and his teammates will face Nantes in Ligue 1 on March 4, followed by the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Bayern Munich on March 9.
