Man City 3-1 Leicester – Erling Halland nets another double
Man City won 3-1 against Leicester in the 31st round of the Premier League, reducing the gap with Arsenal to just 3 points. Haaland scored a brace in this match.
Man City continued their impressive form as they easily defeated Leicester, who are struggling and in danger of relegation. All three of the home team’s goals were scored in the first half, while the away team’s consolation goal was scored in the second half.
Man City started strongly at home. In the 5th minute, Stones quickly shot from the edge of the penalty area, hitting the right post. The Leicester goalkeeper reacted slowly because he was blocked from his view and couldn’t save the shot.
With an early goal, Man City became even more comfortable. In the 10th minute, VAR awarded a penalty to the home team after a Leicester player touched the ball with his hand inside the penalty area. Haaland took responsibility for the penalty and successfully scored from the spot, making the score 2-0 for the home team.
After conceding two goals, Leicester had to push their attacking line forward to look for a goal. It can be said that Leicester had nothing to lose because they were hungry for points, but they quickly fell to Man City’s counterattacks. In the 24th minute, from a quick counterattack, De Bruyne assisted Haaland to run down and shoot the ball past goalkeeper Iversen, making the score 3-0.
After scoring three goals in the first half, Man City slowed down. Coach Guardiola quickly kept his players, saving their energy for the match against Bayern Munich next week by making personnel adjustments right after halftime.
Haaland was substituted in the second half, De Bruyne came on in the 62nd minute, and Man City made four substitutions in just the first 17 minutes of the second half. Thus, Haaland’s record of 32 goals this season is temporarily halted, and the Norwegian striker is just two goals shy of the all-time Premier League scoring record.
Leicester’s efforts were rewarded with a goal that reduced the score to 1-3 by Iheanacho in the 75th minute. The Nigerian striker easily scored a close-range goal after Ederson blocked the away team’s shot. However, that was all that Leicester could do at Etihad.
With three more points, Man City rose to 70 points, just 3 points behind Arsenal. At 8:00 pm tonight, Arsenal will play their 31st round match at West Ham.
With a brace against Leicester, Erling Haaland reached 32 goals in the Premier League 2022/23 season. In the history of the Premier League with 38 rounds, only one player has achieved a similar feat, Mohamed Salah (32 goals in the 2017/18 season). With 8 matches in hand, Haaland has the chance to break this record.
Even Haaland could break the greatest record in Premier League history held by two predecessors, Andy Cole (34 goals in the 1993/94 season) and Alan Shearer (34 goals in the 1994/95 season). However, at that time, the Premier League had 22 teams and 42 rounds.
