Vance Joseph returns to Broncos as defensive coordinator

The Denver Broncos have made a significant move in hiring Vance Joseph as their new defensive coordinator, according to Peter Schrager of Good Morning Football.

Vance Joseph returns to Broncos as defensive coordinator

Joseph is set to reunite with the Broncos after spending the last four seasons as the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator. With his experience, leadership, and a solid cast of defensive players, Joseph could help bring the Broncos’ defense back to its dominant form.

Joseph’s Coaching Experience and Reunion with Broncos

Vance Joseph’s experience as a seasoned coordinator has made him a highly sought-after coach in the NFL. During the coaching cycle, Joseph conducted a lengthy interview with the Philadelphia Eagles, indicating his value in the league.

However, it was the Denver Broncos who hired him to serve as their defensive coordinator under new head coach Sean Payton. Joseph previously spent two seasons as the Broncos head coach from 2017-2018 before being fired. With his return to Denver, Joseph can put his experience to use and contribute to the team’s success.

Joseph’s Return to a Solid Defensive Cast in Denver

The Broncos’ defense already boasts of some excellent players, including safety Justin Simmons, cornerback Patrick Surtain II, and edge rusher Randy Gregory. Joseph is set to helm a solid defensive cast that can help the Broncos regain their dominant form.

Although only Simmons and linebacker Josey Jewell remain from the defense Joseph led during his tenure as head coach in Denver, the veteran coach brings experience and leadership to the table. Payton can now focus his efforts on revamping the struggling offense in Denver, starting with rehabbing quarterback Russell Wilson after a poor 2022 campaign.

Joseph’s Attacking 3-4 Defense and Coaching Staff

Joseph runs an attacking 3-4 defense, which meshes well with the Broncos’ personnel and Payton’s preferred style of defense. Last season in Arizona, the Cardinals blitzed on 36.1 percent of downs, which was the third-most in the NFL, per Next Gen Stats. With this type of aggressive play-calling, the Broncos’ defense could once again become a force to be reckoned with.

Additionally, the Broncos’ new defensive coordinator will retain defensive line coach Marcus Dixon and defensive backs coach Christian Parker as part of his staff. According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, Greg Manusky is being hired as an inside linebackers coach.
